This video is a living testament of how much Google products have deteriorated. Literally almost every single one of their products was far more useful and easy to use 11 years ago than today. Now it's just dog s***

What a great option... this would be. The only thing more disappointing than learning that this feature is not actually available is when you discover that sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't (even in the same session... the feature just disappears) with no hints on how to get this necessary functionality back. It would be far less disappointing, of course, if the route Google gives me between two points didn't include so many inexplicable (and utterly ridiculous) detours.
@googleMaps could you please make the street view seamless? like we dont have to click the arrows again and again, rather it moves like a car, bike or a drone or a video. or a video game. Thanks.

still convinved this was to see how people would react to go.
I found out how to do this in 2024 but can't share the link provided by Google with the details, so I copied and passed it below. It is using the "My Maps" part of Google. It would make more sense that this all be integrated into the map page everyone is using and looking for a simple save button (to be logical and user-friendly, but here we are-we get what we pay for, I guess. Save directions Instructions. On your computer, sign in to "My Maps". Open or create a map. Click Add directions Add directions (hover above the different symbols to find it). In the box on the left, type your start and end locations. The route appears on your map. Add another leg to your trip: Click Add destination. Change how you get there: Below the layer name, click Driving, Bicycling, or Walking. Show step-by-step directions: Click More More and then Step-by-step directions. Change trip path: Point at the trip on the map, then drag elsewhere. Note: Each set of directions goes on its own layer.
Absurd that this function was removed. I have found a convoluted way to do this on my tablet, but not phone and not a browser. WTF?

gmap used to be good, but dragging is not possible now from web browser. Not sure what google is thinking by disabling this feature, maybe saving some electricity to save the earth by doing less computations in route calculation
